Ah, another dreaded never- ending talk about saving your money as a student. We know this topic of conversation seems like an absolute drag, so I’ll save you from the same boring lectures you’ve probably already heard.
Instead, we, at Herbal Hill Studios, have compiled a little list of wonderful hacks anyone can use to save themselves money - from grocery shopping to a full night out. Keep reading to find out more:
Sainsbury’s Local is only a three- minute walk away from Herbal Hill Studios and while they usually have really good offers on, you could still be saving a lot more. First of all, it may be cheaper for you to plan ahead and do your shopping in advance for the week ahead. You never realise how quickly those small £5 and £10 purchases every day can add up, until it’s the end of the month.
For those of you who want to save even more, have you heard of websites which sell short dated food for lower prices than supermarkets? The food isn’t bad quality, it’s just gone past the date that is recommended for optimum consumption. Check out websites such as approvedfood.co.uk to save even further. This is just our advice.
1) SAVE MONEY ON YOUR GROCERIES
There are so many stores online and on the high street who give students great perks and discounts! Most of the shops and restaurants in Farringdon do provide student discount if you tell them which university you are a student at (usually confirmed by showing your Student ID).
You can even sign up to UniDays which is an app that provides you with student discounts for free, or get an NUS Extra card.
2) TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR STUDENT DISCOUNT
If your university does not pay for your course books and you need to buy them yourself, then it may be worth considering buying them second hand from previous students, through Amazon. The books are usually in pretty good condition too! You should also make use of your university’s library as well as local libraries.
The British Library, well known for its huge collection of books, is just a 20- minute walk from your private student accommodation in Farringdon!
You can even save on printing and binding costs by using the in-house service provided by us at Herbal Hill Studios. You can always come down to reception or call our helpful 24/7 security team to see how we can help.
3) BUY SECOND HAND BOOKS
Happy Hour is exactly what it says it is – a few hours of happiness in the evenings of Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, just before rush hour when most local bars in Central London will offer 2-for-1 offers on cocktails. Instead of paying full price for your night out, why not start your night a little earlier while saving?
Coming home from a late night out shouldn’t be too long since we’re based right in Central London within very short walking distances to Farringdon or Chancery Lane stations. Even using Uber shouldn’t be too extortionate when travelling in between Zone 1.
4) MAKE THE MOST OF HAPPY HOUR
From our own personal experiences, we know that students, at some point during their university years, will go through unexpected bills. We are in the age of technology where our mobile phones are our whole lives; from streaming, to downloading, to socialising with friends, even banking and paying bills; we simply cannot keep away from our phones. If you do not want a race pulsing bill at the end of the month, you need to take control of your phone.
Make sure you speak to your provider to get the right contract for you. There are many network providers that now tailor make contracts to suit your budget and needs. You can always browse the web for better deals if your provider cannot give you a budgeted contract.
We are proud to state that one of the best things about staying at Herbal Hill Studios is that we provide, in our individual studios within the student accommodation, free 50MB Wi-Fi so you don’t need to use your data to download, stream or stay in touch with friends and family. Each studio within the accommodation has its very own individual router so you don’t even have to share. Luxury or what!
We hope that these tips help you with the year ahead. Do let us know how you get on and don’t forget we are always here to support you throughout your stay!
